The first school of nursing was established in Kathmandu in1956 under the directive of the health service, ministry of health. The first batch of this school had enrolled only 15 students. This program was illness oriented. This curriculum’s aim was to prepare nurses to be much more efficient in fulfilling the health needs of the people of Nepal.
However in 1972 which the introduction of the new education system plan, nursing education became the responsibility of the I.O.M, Tribhuvan University. Hospital oriented curriculum as applied from 1956 to 1986. After that, a major revised curriculum was introduced in 1987.

It was based on primary health care. It was extended over a period of several years, a new revised curriculum has been introduced from 2006 the aim of this program is to prepare competent self-reliant nurse who will be able to care for individual family community applying nursing process.
